Nourished through Self Care with Makuyo of SIIKA Herb + Honey Co.
Hi friend,
I firmly believe that prioritizing self care has actually helped me grow my business and rebuild my life faster, in this last year especially. In my years of professional hustle, I was stuck in a loop of trying so hard to find success that self care became scheduled (and expensive!) spa days once a quarter instead of daily intention. It took a major pause, and inevitably a breaking point, for me to shift my focus towards prioritizing regular self care. One way I started to integrate this was through simple rituals that brought peace back into my body, my business, and ultimately my life.
This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Makuyo, the founder of SIIKA Herb + Honey Co. Her work is all about slowing down, reconnecting with yourself through daily self care, and remembering that nourishment is the real form of wealth. She recently joined me on The Wealth We Hold Podcast and our conversation reminded me to breathe deeper and let go of the conditioned need to rush.
Here’s more of her story and wisdom, in her own words and heart.
Community as a Catalyst for Authentic Growth
“True community feels like coming home... even if you're thousands of miles away and only connecting on a screen. In a true community, you're comfortable being your full, authentic self, quirks and all. There's no need to put on a performance. The members of your community don't just accept you; they actively support, encourage, and inspire you to shine your light brighter.”
That line from Makuyo says it all. Real community doesn’t just make space for you; it reflects you back to yourself. She shared how being rooted in this kind of community has shaped SIIKA Herb + Honey Co., allowing her to build from a place of authenticity rather than fear.
“Like many people, I struggled with fear, mine was the fear of judgment. Finding a true community helped (and is still helping!) me release that fear, allowing me to show up as my genuine self and build a brand fueled by intuition and creativity.”
Entrepreneurship is constant evolution. When you’re grounded in community, it’s easier to shift, experiment, and keep growing without losing yourself in the process.
Reclaiming the Power of Asking for Help
When I asked how modern women can reclaim that ancestral sense of interdependence, Makuyo didn’t hesitate.
“It's actually super easy: ask for help! I'm not sure when or why it became so taboo for women to do this, but asking for help is absolutely a form of survival. No one is created to be, do, or know everything, and trying to act like you can is a sure path to burnout. So, my advice is to ask for help. And if someone says no, respect their answer and simply ask the next person!”
It’s such a simple reminder, but also so powerful. We’ve been conditioned to believe independence means doing it all alone but the truth is, community thrives when we let others in.
From Hustle to Harmony
Makuyo’s story around hustle and harmony is one so many of us can relate to.
“Being in community allowed me to meet people and share my story, both in person and online. The constant chase of social media, ads, and algorithms never felt right for me or SIIKA. I tried the 'hustle' anyway, and while it made small headway, it was so frustrating... and expensive!”
Eventually, she chose something different.
“So, I scaled back and intentionally started showing up in community spaces. When I say community spaces, I'm not talking about traditional networking events where there’s an underlying expectation of 'how can you help me?' I mean intentional spaces of like-minded women where genuine connection was the only exchange. As a result, SIIKA sales are the best they've ever been, surpassing all of last year this summer. I'm also now able to execute other projects that were stuck in my mind because I was previously lost in the 'hustle.' Both directly and indirectly, my entrepreneurial endeavors thrive when I operate in this harmony and flow versus force. Showing up in community is what helped me achieve that shift.”
That shift from force to flow is exactly what so many of us are craving right now: more ease, more purpose, more community.
Simple Rituals for Reconnection
When it comes to reconnecting with yourself and the world around you, Makuyo keeps it simple.
“The best one is to go outside! More sunlight and less blue light. Women are intrinsically connected to water, so if you're near water, it's incredibly powerful to just be around it. If not, try taking a walk through your neighborhood or during a break from work. Do it without music or a phone call, just you and the path. Notice the flowers, the trees, the leaves, and the people you pass! Acknowledge them. Being present in the moment inherently opens you up to being more connected with nature, yourself, and those around you.”
It’s such a refreshing reminder that self-care doesn’t have to mean more doing, sometimes it’s about slowing down enough to notice what’s already here.
Nourished by Nature
SIIKA carries the ‘Nourished by Nature’ theme, which captures everything she stands for. It’s about slowing down, listening in, and allowing your body, your business, and your life to be guided by something deeper than hustle.
If you’re craving that kind of calm, connection, and clarity, join us for the next Finding Common Ground Women’s Circle on November 20 at 6 PM PST, co-facilitated by Makuyo and me. It’s a free, no-sales space designed for women to connect, reflect, and reset together.
Here’s to a community found through nourishment.
See you inside!
